A friend and I headed to the Spa theatre for CBM Theatre Company’s production of Bugsy Malone and were pleased to see the theatre was nearly full with families and couples, several of whom had taken the time to dress up in Bugsy Malone inspired costumes!

This production was put on by the junior section of CBM and I can honestly say I have never seen such talented young people together in one show before.

The casts singing and acting abilities were fabulous, and their comic timing was far more mature than their years.

The main set was laid out as Fat Sam’s bar but was cleverly used as the backdrop for every scene. The 3 adult stagehands got several laughs as they came on stage after most scenes dressed in brown caretaker jackets and flat caps to mop up the mess from the splurge guns and bring on and off the bar stools and tables. They made a joke of the scene changes instead of trying to hide them.

The production was very true to the original featuring the classic songs such as My Name is Tallulah, Fat Sam’s Grand Slam and You Give a Little Love.

The cast took on several roles including dancers, news reporters and hoodlums and their enthusiasm and talent completely shone through.

By the end of the production we had completely fallen in love with the cast and their characterization and whilst I was a bit apprehensive about seeing an all junior production, I will absolutely be keeping an eye out for their next production and would definitely recommend their shows to anyone.
