There’s nothing quite like a bit of thigh slapping, booing, hissing and the obligatory ‘he’s behind you’ to get you in the mood for some festive family fun in the lead up to Christmas. The Theatre Royal, Bury St Edmunds are staging the well-loved, family classic pantomime Dick Whittington from 1st December - 14th January 2018.

This traditional family pantomime is a must see this season. Hosted at the much loved and beautifully refurbished Theatre Royal, there is no better place to enjoy this family tale. From start to finish this production will have you tapping your toes and bobbing in your seat. The cast is absolutely brilliant at involving the audience from the very beginning of the show right through until the end. Throughout the show you feel a part of the adventure that sees Dick, Alice, Dame Winona, Francis Fitzwarren and Tommy the Cat take down the puffed up Reginald Ratfiend along with his secret love Nibbles, stopping their dastardly plan to rule the world with his rat army!

It may not be all sparkles and special effects, but the performance from all those involved was of a superbly high standard. The set was great, creating a world of colour and fun that didn’t overshadow the fabulous music, high energy dance routines, gorgeous costumes and talented cast. Tommy the Cat was a certain favourite, effortlessly leaping and bounding about the stage showcasing some great ninja cat moves.

If you love a cheesy joke this pantomime is for you. Filled with great one-liners and silly jokes there is something for everyone, subtle adult humour combined with a good measure of slapstick and the odd dose of toilet humour here and there, means family appeal for all. This pantomime is definitely suitable for all the family, from tiny little ones up to your great grandad.

The professional cast is complemented by an amazingly talented cast of young performers who danced their socks off. These girls from across the local area prove to be such an inspiration to any children watching the show. If you’ve got children who love to perform and dream to be on stage, the young chorus members in this years pantomime will really inspire them to give it go. They were exceptional and made the show really come to life in all the musical numbers.

Though it may have started off a little slow, the show increased in pace and excitement, especially in Act 2. We thoroughly enjoyed the show and would recommend going to see it. There’s plenty to get involved with - singing, laughing, dancing, shouting - everyone will be glued to their seats, cheering on our hero of the show Dick Whittington and his trusty Cat Tommy, as they travel far and wide, through many an adventure all the way to Happy Ever After.
